Biography
Spanish classical accordionist Sofía Ros has rapidly established herself on the international classical music scene, with acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and the Musikverein in Vienna. Winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Classical Musician of the Year 2025, the Trophée Mondial de l’Accordéon, the Manhattan International Music Competition, and a finalist at the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, her artistry has earned wide critical acclaim and features on BBC Radio Scotland’s Classical Now and BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.
She has performed in prestigious halls across Europe and the UK, including London's Purcell Room, Edinburgh's Queen’s Hall, and Vienna's Alten Rathaus. In Switzerland, she was featured at the 1001 Harmonies Festival, with recitals at Temple du Bas and Salle Faller. Her international engagements have taken her to the United States, performing with the Irving Symphony Orchestra, Plano Symphony Orchestra, San Angelo Symphony Orchestra, and the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra. She has been invited repeatedly to the Edinburgh International Festival, as well as the St. Magnus Festival, the East Neuk Festival, and the Emerging Artists Programme at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.
Throughout her career, Sofía Ros has collaborated with esteemed conductors and orchestras, including performances of Astor Piazzolla's Aconcagua Concerto under the baton of Maestro Héctor Guzmán in the United States, with Maestro Alastair Willis and the Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra at the Vienna Opera Ball, and her recent debut as soloist with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Gourlay at Glasgow City Halls.
Critically acclaimed for both her technical virtuosity and deep musical expressiveness, her performance at the XL Oftalvist Performance Prize of the Alicante Concert Society was praised by José Antonio Cantón in Revista Ritmo: "The artistic projection of this singular performer is destined to occupy an exalted place among international specialists of her instrument. The fusion of her body with the accordion into a single sonic entity makes her a privileged artist of musical recreation."
Born in the Canary Islands, Sofía began playing the accordion at the age of five. At just thirteen, she was awarded a full scholarship to study at St. Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh, winning the Director's Recital Prize in 2020. She subsequently completed her training under the renowned Serbian accordionist and pedagogue Djordje Gajic at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Performing on a Pigini "Sirius Compact" bayan handcrafted in Castelfidardo, Italy, Sofía Ros continues to explore new horizons for the classical accordion, captivating audiences worldwide.
